20+ acre site in Southwest Atlanta requires innovative redevelopment focused on affordable housing and job creation
Atlanta – Atlanta BeltLine, Inc. (ABI) has issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) for the 20+ acre site at 1050 Murphy Avenue, known as Murphy Crossing. The RFP seeks a developer to purchase and redevelop the site with a focus on creating the maximum number of sustainable living-wage jobs that are accessible to the neighborhood residents; economic opportunities for the surrounding community; affordable housing; green space; innovative site design; and other program elements in a manner that enhances the site and the surrounding neighborhoods.
Murphy Crossing sits on the Westside Trail and within the Oakland City neighborhood and is bordered by the neighborhoods of Adair Park and Capitol View. ABI previously published an RFP for redevelopment of the site, but the procurement was cancelled in 2020, due in part to the impacts of COVID. Shortly thereafter, ABI launched a new community engagement strategy to develop a new draft scope of work for an updated RFP. While ABI engages the community on all aspects of the Atlanta BeltLine, including input on the original Murphy Crossing RFP, the expanded strategy in fall 2020 included an extensive series of public meetings, stakeholder advisory committee meetings, surveys, and revisiting the original RFP.
While public engagement is paused during the active RFP process, after a developer is selected, ABI will resume engagement with the neighborhoods and stakeholders adjacent to the site through public meetings, the established stakeholder group, and community outreach. The final outcomes for the site have yet to be determined and the community will certainly have a voice.
The redevelopment of Murphy Crossing is a cornerstone of ABI’s expanding land acquisition strategy to guide thoughtful and equitable redevelopment. In the past several months, ABI has purchased Avon Avenue (a 9.3+/- acre property in southwest Atlanta) and Garson Road (a 3 acre property in south Buckhead) which will open opportunities for longer and deeper affordability in neighborhoods in geographies around the Atlanta BeltLine.
Proposals for the purchase and redevelopment are due August 3, 2021 at 3 p.m. The RFP can be viewed here.
Updates will be posted at www.beltline.org/murphy to include all upcoming meetings, previous presentations and meeting recordings, and timeline updates.
