Voters all across Georgia came out on November 2nd to elect several key leadership positions to office. On the federal level, Republican Senator Johnny Isakson defeated Democrat Mike Thurmond to hold on to his U.S. Senate seat. Almost every incumbent member of Georgia’s congressional delegation maintained their seat. However, some changes did occur this election cycle with Republican Austin Scott defeating Democratic Congressman Jim Marshall. Also, Rob Woodall defeated Doug Heckman to win the open seat in the 7th District. Nationally, the Republicans won over sixty seats to take control of the House of Representatives while the Democrats maintained control of the Senate.
Statewide, this election marked a historic night for Republicans as the GOP swept every state elected constitutional office. This charge was led by Republican Nathan Deal’s victory over Democrat Roy Barnes and Libertarian John Monds to secure the state’s top position of governor. Other notable statewide GOP victories include Lieutenant Governor Casey Cagle, Secretary of State Brian Kemp, Attorney General Sam Olens, State School Superintendent John Barge, Insurance Commissioner Ralph Hudgens, Agriculture Commissioner Gary Black and Labor Commissioner Mark Butler. The GOP also maintained their hold on the Georgia House of Representatives and the Georgia Senate. Three of five constitutional amendments passed. Amendment #2 would have added $10 to car registration fees to boost trauma care funding and Amendment #3 would have allowed the state to execute multiyear contracts for long-term transportation projects but both failed to receive the voter support necessary to pass.
