Deal Signs Immigration Bill

Governor Deal signed House Bill 87 into law on May 13th.  Georgia is now one of only three states to adopt this type of immigration law.  Georgia, Arizona and Utah have adopted legislation targeting illegal immigrants because they feel the federal government has not properly addressed the issue.  HB 87 gives local law enforcement the power to investigate the immigration status of certain suspects and requires many private businesses start using a federal program called E-Verify to confirm whether their newly hired employees are eligible to work in the United States.  The Council along with the agriculture and tourism industries are concerned about the economic implications of this legislation.  You can read the entire bill here.
