The Council launched its new South Metro Advisory Committee with a great kick-off meeting with over 80 Council members, City and County officials and guests at the Green Manor in Union City on Tuesday, May 19th.
The meeting kicked off with an overview of the Council’s work on promoting regional cooperation and encouraging quality growth and development practices across the Atlanta region. The Council is excited to finally become fully engaged with these issues in the South Metro Area.
The inaugural meeting featured special guest, Union City Mayor Vince Williams. Mayor Williams welcomed the partnership with the Council for Quality Growth and encouraged elected officials from other South Metro Cities and Fulton and Clayton Counties to get engaged as well. The Mayor discussed the major initiatives underway including the redevelopment of Shannon Mall and the creation of an overlay for the South Fulton Parkway Corridor. The Council is excited to work with Union City and other municipalities in the area on these projects and others to encourage and promote quality development.
The South Metro Advisory Committee will cover all of South Fulton and Clayton counties – one of the fastest growing markets in the Atlanta region. We have heard from more and more Council members taking advantage of the great development potential in the area expressing the need for the Council to expand our presence Southward. The meetings will occur on a monthly basis at the Green Manor restaurant and follow the model of the Council’s other advisory committees, hosting City and County elected officials and Planning and Community Development Directors, to build relationships and address policy issues like zoning and permitting, infrastructure investment and other topics related to growth and development in the South Metro Area.
The Council thanks Mayor Williams for speaking and for his commitment to promoting quality development and regional cooperation in the South Metro area. Special thanks to our meeting sponsors Lowe Engineers and SAFEbuilt.
