The Redefining the Ride – Xpress 2.0 study was launched in 2023 to better meet the post-pandemic travel needs of commuters, promote operational efficiency, and align routes with emerging in-person job centers. The Redefining the Ride – Xpress 2.0 proposed system recommendations reimagine the Xpress system to better match actual usage and improve overall efficiency. Currently, Xpress is only serving 30% of pre-pandemic ridership. The proposed recommendations explore opportunities to provide needed regional access to jobs, education, and key destinations. Proposed in three distinct phases, the Redefining the Ride – Xpress 2.0 proposed system recommendations optimize current commuter bus service, launch a “reverse commute” option to provide access to suburban job centers, and expand parts of the service area by adding new routes with the goal of increasing ridership.

Phase I: Enhanced Efficiency

  • Streamline commuter trips.
  • Maximize key park-and-ride lots.
  • Update bus stops and connections to MARTA rail stations.
  • Merge underutilized routes and park-and-ride lots.

Phase II: Expanded Opportunities

  • Introduce reverse commute trips from downtown Atlanta to suburban destinations.
  • Use available bus capacity to serve major employment centers outside the perimeter

Phase III: New Markets

  • Provide additional coverage to major in-person employment centers and transfer locations.
  • Create new connections to areas such as Fulton Industrial Boulevard, Town Center/Big Shanty, College Park/Airport, Perimeter Center, Alpharetta, and Marietta.
  • Enhance east-west regional coverage and initiate new routes to key employment hubs
